Mayor’s Message on COVID-19 – May 26, 2020

Hello everyone, week ten for my messages and mid-summer heat is upon us in May!

Encouraging numbers today in Ontario with 287 new cases, the lowest since the end of March. Our overall numbers for infections now stand at 26,191 and the death toll is at 2,123.

Our small craft harbour expansion Request for Proposals closes this week. At this moment we are still optimistic that construction can begin later in July.

Our township just received a new 4X4 extended cab pick-up truck to replace a 2004 pick-up this week. Rumour has it Floyd is happy with this much needed upgrade to our fleet.

Starting Thursday of this week, we will now be accepting clean brush at the landfill on Thursdays and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The old dock at the mouth of the river which was destroyed by high water, waves and ice has been removed and the shoreline cleaned up of debris. The remaining rock crib will be marked as soon as possible with buoys to alert any boaters in the vicinity of this potential hazard.

Your township’s Emergency Control Group continues to meet regularly to discuss a number of topics including reopening of our trails and Bridal Veil Falls. The underlying principle for us is that these spaces, if opened, must be done so safely. Maintaining public health guidelines is paramount but we will continue to examine options.

I recently saw an email entitled “Same Storm – Different Boats” (author unknown). In it, the writer point out that although we are all in the same storm (regionally, provincially, nationally and globally), we are not all in the same boat. Your ship might be shipwrecked, others’ may not be, or vice versa. Some families have already been devastated by this virus, many more have lost no one. The email goes on to give other examples of the positives and the negatives, and ends with this:

“We are all on different ships, during this storm experiencing a very different journey.

Realize that and be kind.”

Thank you and stay safe,

Ian
