Mayor’s Message on COVID-19 – January 19, 2021

Hello everyone , message 38

Ontario reported 2,578 additional cases of Covid-19 Monday which is actually good news as it was the lowest number in over two weeks.

The new variant of the virus (England‘s) is increasing provincially and data suggests it is 56 percent more easily transmissible ( but with no more serious impacts on infected persons than the original virus).

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. David Williams said that the province must cut its daily Covid-19 case counts to below 1,000 before lockdown measures can be lifted according to a recent CBC news report.

Within Canada we have now surpassed 715,000 total cases, thankfully over 623,000 have recovered and unfortunately 18, 226 have died as a result of this virus.

On a very positive note, the Wikwemikong Nursing Home patrons and staff have received a Covid-19 vaccine last week. The very first not only for Manitoulin but also within our much larger Health Unit.

While it may be some time yet before a complete roll out can happen it is so encouraging to see a start.

Our local case numbers, excepting one recent family infection, remain very low. This is a testament to the continued hard work and vigilance on everyone’s part to see this through to the end.

We can and will see better days ahead, stay the course.

Thank you,

Ian
