Mayor’s Message on COVID-19 – December 22,2020

Mayor’s Message on Covid-19 – December 22,2020

Predictably, after more than 2000 new infections in Ontario for the past 7 days, we are re-entering a provincial shut down similar to last spring.

Our local situation is currently good, no new infections since December 12 and in fact the Sudbury and District Health Unit had just returned to a green zone, again, because of minimal numbers.

The rationale provincially is to treat everyone the same to help avoid people moving during the holidays to areas with less restrictions.

Hospitals in the higher infection areas are at risk of maximum capacity in their intensive care units.

We can continue to do what has been proven to work until the approved vaccines can be disseminated.

Realistically it likely will be spring but it will happen in due course and we will have a much different way of life in the foreseeable future.

While the holidays this year will be different we need to reflect on the positives. Your township and Manitoulin as a whole have handled this pandemic very well through a lot of determination and hard work.

Our collective wills to work together as municipalities, First Nations, medical professionals, school boards, services boards, business sectors and others has been remarkable as we all strived for one common goal, to keep people safe.

I wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday as we all look forward to a better 2021.

Thank you,

Ian
