Mayor’s Message on COVID-19 – July 7, 2020
Hello everyone, week 16 for my messages.
To change the format a little I will report on the number of new cases in Ontario. This past week we have seen 780 new cases including 185 today. It seems like we are slowly improving as the previous week saw a 1,370 increase.
The City of Toronto and some other large urban centres have now made the wearing of face coverings mandatory in closed, indoor public settings.
On July 2nd a news release was issued to all employers in the Public Health Sudbury and Districts service area via mail. It came from Dr. Penny Sutcliffe, Chief Medical Officer of Health. This letter requests a policy of face coverings to be worn in any areas in which customers interact with one another or with staff members or any areas that are open or accessible to members of the public. These new guidelines come into effect July 8, 2020.
Our good results in this country have not been an accident, it has been a direct result of our actions to date like physical distancing. We must continue to actively follow all of the guidelines and remain vigilant.
The news south of our border gets worse daily, clearly, we can see what has not worked.
On the township front, Billings tried a virtual town hall meeting on July 2 aimed primarily at our local businesses. We were seeking some ideas and input on how we might assist in matters relating to impacts on their business from COVID-19. Five businesses participated plus several other members of the public. From my perspective it was very worthwhile with a number of ideas being shared for things to improv, with communication in a timely fashion being important to all.
